What is Diacetyl?
Diacetyl (butanedione or butane-2,3-dione) is an organic compound with the chemical formula (CH3CO)2. It is a yellow/green liquid with an intensely buttery flavor. It is a vicinal diketone (two C=O groups, side-by-side) with the molecular formula C4H6O2. Diacetyl occurs naturally in alcoholic beverages and is added to some foods to impart its buttery flavor.
The United States National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health has suggested diacetyl, when used in artificial butter flavoring (as used in many consumer foods), may be hazardous when heated and inhaled over a long period.
What is Popcorn Lung?
Workers in several factories that manufacture artificial butter flavoring have been diagnosed with bronchiolitis obliterans, a rare and serious disease of the lungs. The cases found have been mainly in young, healthy, nonsmoking males. As with other end-stage lung diseases, transplantation is currently the most viable treatment option. However, lung transplant rejection is very common and happens to be another setting in which bronchiolitis obliterans is known to occur.
The disease has been called "popcorn worker's lung" because it was first seen in former workers of a microwave popcorn factory in Missouri, but NIOSH refers to it by the more general term "flavorings-related lung disease". It has also been called "flavorings-related bronchiolitis obliterans" or diacetyl-induced bronchiolitis obliterans. People who work with flavorings that include diacetyl are at risk for flavorings-related lung disease, including those who work in popcorn factories, restaurants, other snack food factories, bakeries, candy factories, margarine and cooking spread factories, and coffee processing facilities.
Is it used in E Liquid?
Some E Liquids have been found to contain Diacetyl, however it is not found and never will be found in any of Wicked Wizard e liquids. Certain E Liquid manufacturers have used normal food flavourings to create their e liquids and as such when their liquids were analysed it appeared to contain small amounts of diacetyl. A responsible e liquid manufacturer will make sure that the flavours they use do not contain any known harmful chemicals.
Should I be worried about Diacetyl?
If you aren't sure whether your e liquid contains diacetyl you should contact the company that makes it and ask them. If they can't give you an answer we would strongly urge you to reconsider using it. The amount of diacetyl found in any e liquid is very small and you would have to vape an extraordinary amount of it to have the quantity you would get from working in a popcorn factory so don't worry yourself to much but better to be safe than sorry. The threat from inhaling diacetyl through vaping have been greatly exagerated and compared to smoking traditional cigarettes it would be far safer to continue vaping. Our advice is if you aren't sure you should only use liquids which come from a reputable company who can provide an independent analysis report showing that their e liquids do not contain diacetyl and other harmful chemicals.
